Defaults as restrictions on classical Hilbert-style proofs

چکیده
Since the earliest formalisation of default logic by Reiter many contributions to this appealing approach to nonmonotonic reasoning have been given. The diierent formalisations are here presented in a general framework that gathers the basic notions, concepts and constructions underlying default logic. Our view is to interpret defaults as special rules that impose a restriction on the juxtaposition of monotonic Hilbert-style proofs of a given logic L. We propose to describe default logic as a logic where the juxtaposition of default proofs is subordinate to a restriction condition. Hence a default logic is a pair (L;) where properties of the logic L, like compactness, can be interpreted through the restriction condition. Diierent default systems are then given a common characterization through a speciic condition on the logic L. We also prove cumulativity for any default logic (L;) by slightly modifying the notion of default proof. We extend, in fact, the language of L in a way close to that followed by Brewka in the formulation of his cumulative default system. Finally we show the existence of innnitely many intermediary default logics, depending on and called linear logics, which lie between Reiter's and Lukaszewicz' versions of default logic.

Converting Non-Classical Matrix Proofs into Sequent-Style Systems
In M. McRobbie and J. Slaney, editors, 13 International Conference on Automated Deduction, LNAI 1104, pp. 418–432, c ©Springer Verlag, 1996. Abstract. We present a uniform algorithm for transforming matrix proofs in classical, constructive, and modal logics into sequent style proofs. Making use of a similarity between matrix methods and Fitting’s prefixed tableaus we first develop a procedure f...
متن کاملNon-elementary Speed-Ups in Default Reasoning
Default logic is one of the most prominent formalizations of common-sense reasoning. It allows \jumping to conclusions" in case that not all relevant information is known. However, theoretical complexity results imply that default logic is (in the worst case) computationally harder than classical logic. This somehow contradicts our intuition about common-sense reasoning: default rules should he...
متن کاملAnalytic Calculi for Non-Classical Logics: Theory and Applications
The possession of a suitable proof-calculus is the starting point for many investigations into a logic, including decidability and complexity, computational interpretations and automated theorem proving. By suitable proof-calculus we mean a calculus whose proofs exhibit some notion of subformula property (‘analyticity’). In this talk we describe a method for the algorithmic introduction of anal...
متن کاملStructured Derivations as a Unified Proof Style for Teaching Mathematics
Structured derivations were introduced by Back and von Wright as an extension of the calculational proof style originally proposed by E.W. Dijkstra and his colleagues. Structured derivations added nested subderivations and inherited assumptions to the original calculational style. This paper introduces a further extension of the structured derivation format, and gives a precise syntax and seman...
متن کاملA proof theoretical approach to Continuation Passing Style
In this paper we study the relation with continuation passing style(CPS) and classical proofs, proof theoretically. There is two style of CPS translation { Call by name (CBN) and Call by value(CBV). We revealed that in the case of classical proofs, this two reduction strategy may induce di erent result even if the language is purely functional(i.e. proof theoretical). We explain this through th...
